Abstract:Since 1976 the Nigerian government has regulated wages and salaries, and non-wage incomes through an incomes policy. This paper is concerned with the redistributive and price stabilisation goals of the policy. Based on a survey of the 42 industrial unions currently existing in Nigeria, and of 230 firms representing a broad industrial perspective, the paper examines the opinions of unions and management on what they believe to be the causes of inflation in Nigeria, whether the controls of the past few years have been uniformly applied to all income-earners, and how controls have affected or should affect wage differentials. The analysis of their views is supplemented by existing secondary materials. Ref., sum., tab.
