Abstract:Traces the growth and distribution of income in Tanzania since independence. Since independence a process of increasing income inequality has manifested itself, not only between town and countryside, but also between various groups of wage earners. The nature of the problems wich arose (indicated in this paper) required a framework - an ideology supported by a vision of the future - whereto reference could be made and to which parochial interests could be subjected for the sake of 'the national interest'. This framework was provided in the Arusha Declaration of February, 1967 which: laid the accent of Tanzania's policy on internal development. The principles embodied in the Declaration are indicated and discussed by the author His conclusion: Although the problems with which Tanzania is confronted through the acceptance of the Arusha Declaration have not become less complicated, there exists good hope that with a continuation of present policies, better results can be obtained in the future. The political and economic situation in Tanzania has been considerably clarified. Notes.
