Abstract: | In this reevaluation of the - now more than a decade demised - system of cooperative credit, one question seems to be prominent: Does there exist any link between the so-called 'traditional solidarity' and the foundations of a Western model of cooperative organization to be introduced to Africa? The author tries to show the humanitarian touch of the last stages of colonialism rested on some fundamental misconception of African society. Sections: Agricultural credit in Africa and Cameroon - Characteristics of the new type of credit (Coopérative de Crédit Mutual, 1950s) - Technical deficiencies - The social determinants of failure.
