| Abstract: | Zaire's transition to the Third Republic (1990-1997) was characterized by the decline of the national currency (the zaire) and the growing 'dollarization' of the economy. This article describes the consequences for the foreign currency market, especially for the 'cambistes', or informal money exchange brokers. In particular, it examines the changing gender basis of 'cambisme', from women with a background in trade to unemployed young men, and the shifting moral characterization of the informal money exchange market. The article argues that the evolution of the foreign currency market is not only determined by changes in economic opportunities, but also by the different kinds of social identity the 'cambistes' have adopted. The article is based on interviews with older and later generations of 'cambistes', carried out in Kinshasa in 1995. Bibliogr., sum. in English and French.
