Abstract:In 1966 the Veterinary Training Institute at Entebbe was allocated additional land for development of practical training facilities in animal husbandry and pasture agronomy. Changes in curriculum organisation and increased emphasis on practical training called for the development of new facilities that could be used to increase student proficiency, particularly in animal husbandry. Suggestions were made for the development of 2 3/4 acres into a small holder dairy unit with the following objectives: 1) to teach practical aspects of dairy cattle management; 2) to teach practical aspects of pasture management; 3) to furnish an opportunity for staff members to evaluate students on their practical work; 4) to serve as a demonstration unit for farmers. Sections: Background information - Dairy cattle management - Milking - Breeding - Calf rearing - Pasture management - Conclusion. Tables.
