Abstract: | The West African Sahel is used here to refer to the eight countries that joined together in 1973 to form the Comité Permanent Interétat de Lutte centre la Secheresse dans le Sahel (Cape Verde, Senegal, Gambia, Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Chad). After defining the bioclimatic zone and political region and outlining the multiple role of forests and forestry, the paper reviews strategies used in forestry development in the Sahel, examines selected initial results, and outlines elements of the reorientation that will be needed to place future sector development on a sounder footing.
