Abstract:Making reference to Joseph H. Greenberg's observations in 'Some universals of grammar with particular reference to the order of meaningful elements' (1963), the author presents as the main thesis of this study that the deep order of Amharic sentences is not SOV (Subject-Object-Verb) but SVO (or VSO). After application of an argument formulated by John R. Ross (in 'Gapping and the order of constituents', 1967) to Amharic, some independent evidence for the conclusion is drawn. Ref., notes, scheme.
