Abstract: | Slang is in fact the use of uncommon synonyms. It is interesting to observe that this slang (---) is the product of the educated. (--) It is a positive attempt to enrich the language, to breathe into it vitality and an ability to cope with changing conditions. 4 groups: A. use of English and other foreign words, mainly modern for which no convenient Arabic equivalent exits. B. Use of English and other foreign words, for which an Arabic word does exist. In both cases Al Majma' al laghawi (taal zuiveraars) suggests alternatives based on classical Arabic. C. Adoption of english etc. words and phrases of which the original meaning has been twisted to give a new significance D. there is a set of words, the origins of which are obscure for which a perfectly good Arabic equivalent exists. List of the most used words, followed by some comments by a Sudanese reader. |
