Abstract:This paper analyses the problems of transforming traditional artisanal fisheries into a more developed sector such that they can make a better overall contribution to the development of the Tanzanian economy. Another task of this paper is to examine to what extent socialist forms of production have been established in the coastal fisheries. The data upon which much of this article is based is the result of fieldwork in eleven Tanzanian coastal fishing villages in 1974. To that extent it is based upon a small area of coastline stretching some 180 kilometres between Saadani (Coast Region, Bagamoyo District) in the North and Kisiju-Pwani (Coast Region, Kisarawe District) in the South. The first part of the paper looks at some of the background behind the overall development of marine fisheries in the country. The second part analyses the micro-economies of the eleven fishing villages mentioned. The paper ends with some tentative conclusions for future development. Ref., notes, tables, maps.
