Abstract: | The fishery of Zanzibar and Pemba islands is exclusively marine. A major portion of the fish is landed by artisanal fishermen, operating close to the coast. The only commercial fishing company in the islands is the Zanzibar Fishing Company (ZAFICO). The exact level of exploitation of fishing grounds is not well known because of lack of information on catch, effort and the size-composition of the catch. In December 1980 a survey was conducted which aimed to provide a frame of sampling units and to suggest a statistical procedure which could be used to collect catch and effort data in the two islands. The objectives were to identify all marine landing sites along the Zanzibar and Pemba islands and take an inventory of their fishing vessels, gear and fishermen. The results of the survey are presented and discussed. Map, ref., tab. (The map has inadvertently been switched with that belonging to another article, and appears on p. 23). |
