Abstract: | In the main the Zambian fisheries are made up of small fishing units scattered over wide areas, each operating few nets. Two main developmental trends must be pursued: 1) to increase the catching power of the fishermen by the formation of larger units, using greater fleets of nets from bigger boats; 2), by concentrating efforts on fewer waterside centres by the provision of marketing facilities where fishermen and trader can carry on their business. These objectives are implemented by: technical research, training in handling new equipment, provision of loans, increase in extension work with special attention to fish handling and processing techniques, educational and publicity campaigns, encouraging the formation of a national fishermen's union.
