Abstract: | Comprises two sections: in the first section the extent of the relationship between language and culture and, specifically, the value of linguistic studies to ethnography is discussed (Historical background of ethnolinguistics - The importance in synchronic studies - The importance in diachronic studies - Some cultural inferences based on the Afar lexicon); the second section presents illustrations of the ideas presented in the first section, based on some one thousand lexical language cards gathered during three years of contact with the Afar (Danakil) tribe in Ethiopia (Lexical elaboration as an indication of cultural interests - General terms as an indication of a lack of cultural focus - Genetic relationship indicated by vocabulary - Lexical borrowing as ethnographic data).
