Abstract: | In Sudan the developing food culture recognizes only a small minority of the vast variety of fish species available. Certain fish species are consumed in preference to others and certain others are considered inedible. In this paper, a new and scientific system of economic classification of edible Nile fishes is attempted. The ultimate aim of this reclassification is to widen the scope of popular consumption of fish which should in turn affect the market values of fish and may help to alleviate the impact of consumption on these rather limited resources. It is hoped that by establishing the nutritional value of all edible fishes together with considerations of their appearance and taste, new consumption patterns may be encouraged to evolve gradually. This is also expected to aid future efforts in the fields of economic fish cultivation and fish food industries. Ref., sum. |
