Abstract:Conclusion: In rural Tanzania prolonged breast feeding is practised widely. This practice has enormous advantages and should be encouraged. However, even in rural Tanzania the trend to feed the child with cows milk, artificial milks, and bottle feeding is escalating. Besides trying to campaign against this trend, the time has come when we should not sit on the fence but also take a positive attitude and teach those mothers who have to artificially feed their children how to do so safely. The milk firms must be persuaded to tell mothers how to use their products safely and not to induce mothers to abandon the breast in favour of their products. Fig, ref., tab.
