| Abstract: | After examination of the underlying principles of the democracy which the British were keen to transplant in their African colonies - liberal democracy or the Westminster model - is dealt with the question: Is there such a thing as African democracy, or an African approach to democracy. The African approach must in the first place take account of the African realities, i.e. African traditional heritage. This means, inter alia, rejection of capitalism, and with it the kind of political institutions that go with capitalism, namely the Westminster model. Socialism must be accepted because it is the system which most closely approximates traditional African society and because it is the only system in which there can be effective equality of the people.
