Abstract: | Between the sand dunes of the Namib desert and the South Atlantic coast lies the territory of the Aonin or Topnaar, a Nama tribe of South-West Africa. What makes them so different from any other Khoi-khoi people is the annual harvesting of the nara melon and sea fishing. This article examines whether the Topnaar display traits of a 'harvesting people'. Sections: composition of the Topnaar community - traditional economic life - the concept of a harvesting people - does the definition apply to the Topnaar? - methods of conservation - territoriality and property rights pertaining to the crop - settlement of disputes - inheritance of patches - from a migrant to a settled way of life.
