Abstract:Analyses the implications of the free-market model in terms of social values. It is clear that apartheid is not an 'anachronistic white elephant' but the means by which ethnic identities could be preserved within a new industrial society and the method of actively fostering this continued industrialization. The article describes the growth of ethnicity since 1910, the economic basis of it, the rise of Afrikaner Nationalism and the liberal response to it Notes.
