Abstract: | The Babinza are one of the many ng'anda (sing. lung'anda) or clan groups into which the Wasukuma are divided. Some of these ng'anda were clan groups to which the ruling families of the various states in Usukuma belonged. The Babinza were one of the largest of these royal clan groups and ruled a cluster of several small political units. Most Babinza live in eastern Usukuma. Among the peoples who have had a great cultural impact on the Babinza are their southeastern and eastern neighbors, the Tatoga and the Masai. This paper discusses their relations with each of these ethnic groups during the last three hundred years. Notes, tab. |
