Abstract:Although the phenomenon of state-formation has undoubtedly occurred many times in Hausa-land during the last millenium, very little light has yet been thrown on the actual processes involved in this business. This article attempts a preliminary reconsideration of the available evidence bearing on the actual practice of state-formation in Hausaland and draws attention to some of the more important problems involved. Sections: The Hausa-speaking people and the Hausa States - The 'evidence' for the Berber invasions - The legend of the Hausa Bakwai - The problem of state-formation among the Hausa-speaking people - The development of the Birni - The importance of migration. Notes.
