Abstract:This paper was written in reaction to the need for direction and clarity in planning and executing community self-help development projects. It first examines the need for the involvement of the local population in rural development in a proper manner. It then evaluates a number of rural development projects being implemented through organized development and self-help programmes. Finally, the paper suggests ways and means of channelling the enthusiasm which most rural communities show for rural development to more beneficial goals of improving their standard of living, Notes, tab.
