Abstract:Reviews rather briefly the recent economic-demographic situation in Africa and examines the problems of population in relation to development, including the population policy content of recent development programmes in selected African countries. The last section of the paper examines the prospects and problems for population trends and patterns in Africa. Sections: some demographic and economic indicators in Africa - aspects of population problems - population policies - the carrying capacity of the land. Conclusion: in spite of the unfavourable demographic situation in most African countries, development planners are cautioned from relying exclusively on population policy measures as the only route to achieving rapid economic development.
