Abstract: | The 1962 census of Liberia (results published in 1964) showed that the country contained 1, 016, 443 people and repudiated grossly overestimated population figures used by some early writers. Described are the basic principles of this first complete census taken in Liberia. A comparison of the census results with the available pro-census figures is almost impossible, with exception for the Americo-Liberians, because of the inconsistency and exaggeration of these figures. With regard to recent population figures on Liberia, e.g. the 1970 World Population Data Sheet issued by the Population Reference Bureau of Washington, D.C., they are, coming after the 1962 census, somewhat more reliable than the pre-census figures, but still far from perfect. This is mainly due to uncertainty concerning the number of migrant people moving to and from Monrovia and other areas of economic opportunity. The second national population census is scheduled for early 1972. Notes, tables, map. |
