| Abstract: | Over the last half-century, the inhabitants of southern Anlo have successfully implemented a crop system in the area surrounding the traditional capital of Angola that has transformed a harsh environment into a developing and prosperous oasis. Despite the problems caused by scarcity of cultivable land (extremely depleted sandy soil), sea erosion and drought, coupled with the constant danger of floods provoked by irregular rainfall and the overflowing of the Volta and lagunes, the Anlos have developed a farming system based on irrigation, massive use fertiliser, crop rotation and intensive cropping. Their major crop is the shallot (cillium ascoloricum), locally called Sabala. The present study focuses on the off-times meticulously perfected methods used in crop preparation and the type of organization accompanying them. Notes, ref. |
