Abstract:In the Arusha tribe of northern Tanzania, formal education traditionally began when a group of boys reached the age of circumcision, which was usually sixteen or seventeen years. Then they were taught how to behave when they become murran - members of the warior age-grade. In these notes the author has not analysed the age-grade system, nor described the circumcision ceremonies; rather he has focussed his attention on the formal education that is given to young Arusha boys immediately before circumcision and for a short time afterwards.
