Abstract:The author describes the gradual modification of a language from what may be regarded as if traditional 'base' or structure in the face of powerful foreign influences. The article is concerned with demonstrating the mutual interaction of town and country in introducing and thereby adding to the vocabulary of Bemba new words or forms of expression from other languages. Primary task is to provide some evidence (however tentative) that borrowing in Bemba shows a clear pattern whereby certain of the borrowed words from foreign sources were, on the one hand, the result of cultural-linguistic contact between the foreign-agent transmitters and the speakers of Bemba in rural areas, with subsequent transmission initiating from the rural to the urban areas, and on the other hand, the result of those living or working in urban centres acquiring new forms of expression and transmitting these to the rural areas.
