Abstract: | Object of this article is to put forward the view that there are dilemmas inherent in disease control and to expose their nature. The argument that the author puts forward is that, while many attempts at development in the tropics, especially in the medical field, may have obvious advantages for individuals, they may seriously upset the precarious balance which man has achieved with his environment. The author believes that the African environment is far less stable than the European one and that the African husbandman, who is so closely adapted to that environment, stands to lose far more than he will gain by implementation of disease-control programs without considering their consequences, even the consequences of their complete success.
