Abstract:Looks at a peripheral African society, Ovambo and Nkhumbi society, in a period when contacts with white settlers, companies or colonial officials were reduced or non-existent. In the period 1845-1915 this society underwent a process of underdevelopment and class formation linked to the evolution of commercial relations with western societies. The article describes this process. Map, notes.
