Abstract:Age-sets among the Mbeere have not been formed since the early 1950s and generation-sets since the 1930s. But people over forty can identify themselves by age-set and generation-set. The article examines the structural features of Mbeere generation classes and generation-sets and relates these features to traditional politics, ritual, and belief. Sections: setting - recruitment and structure - sets and political activity - ritual, totems and belief. Conclusion: along with kinship and age-set affiliation, generation classes and generation-sets provided principles guiding behaviour. Notes, ref., sum. in French.
