Abstract:The Narok District of Kenya spans the extremes of educational resistance and of educational enthusiasm. The district has one group - the pastoral Maasai - the majority of whose schoolage children are encouraged by their elders to keep clear of education; and another very mixed group of outsiders from other tribes who have an acquisitive and ambitious attitude towards education and development. Schools are kept alive for the Maasai under enrolment conditions which would have closed them down in most other parts of Kenya. The article examines the problems in question and attempts an analysis of current educational provision in the following parts: Low Maasai participation in the educational system (with a description of the structure of formal education) - Compulsion and drop-out: implications at primary level - Secondary schools: selection, performance and aspirations - Future prospects.
