Abstract: | After a description of some features of what might be called the 'traditional civil religion' of one African group, the Baluba of southern Zaire (by 'traditional Africa' the author means Africa before European colonial occupation), the article shows how, in the area of 'civil religion', traditional beliefs and practices have an interesting and somewhat ambiguous relationship to contemporary efforts to develop national consciousness and loyalty.
