| Abstract: | The Rendille are pastoral nomads who subsist on the dairy products of camels, goats and sheep. The present paper describes and analyses the livestock ecology, pastoral movements and chandes in Rendille social groups. The importance of camels, technological adjustments to camel rearing for a stable food resource, the determinants of pastoral movement and its patterns, social adaptations to camel herding, and the peculiarities of camel pastoral society are discussed.
