Abstract:An abstract of the Dissertation of Arthur Abraham for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of History, Fourah Bay College, May, 1971. In the acquisition of political authority among the Mende, the basis of power hinges primarily on the founder. This has two implications: it means the acquisition of political rights through the founding of one settlement or more, and acquiring such rights through conquest.
