Abstract:The main purpose of this paper is to present the Lovedu system of asymmetrical matrilateral cross-cousin marriage in relation to Lévi-Strauss's model and Leach's analysis of Kachin-type marriage, in which he briefly refers to the Lovedu system. The article begins by setting out very briefly Lévi-Strauss's model and by discussing Leach's analysis of the Kachin system. This serves as a basis for comparison with the Lovedu system which is given in some detail. Conclusion: the asymmetrical matrilateral cross-cousin marriage system of the Lovedu is clearly very different from the Kachin system. Fig., notes, Bibl.
