Abstract: | According to some myths and legends of the Maasai a sharp distinction between pastoralists, agriculturalists, and hunters-gatherers has existed since the beginning of time. This article shows that the relations between the pastoralist Maasai and the neighbouring farmers and hunters were dynamic, by describing different levels of interaction: exchange, inter-marriage and age-sets.
