Abstract:This study seeks to stimulate interest in, and to develop a systematic framework for the civil-military relations in the pre-colonial Ndebele society, evaluating the character of militarism in Ndebele society, and in preindustrial, subsistence-level societies in general. The first methodological framework of it endeavors to apply current theories of fragmentation and fragment societies to the study of non-Western society; the second framework is an interdisciplinary approach to the study of civil-military relations. These relations should be studied as a system composed of interrelated and interdependent elements. Sections: Ndebele militarism: sources - Predispositional factors - Historical factors: birth of the nation - Situational factors: militarism and kinship - Situational factors: castes, regiment, and nationhood - The regimental system - Summary and conclusion.
