| Abstract: | The Ndebele have been characterized mainly as raiders - an approach that has obscured the fact that they had strong commercial relations with both their black and white neighbours. This article aims at simply putting together qualitative and quantitative data on the Ndebele exports and imports, on the people or societies that they traded with, and on the people in Matabeleland itself who benefited from the nineteenth-century commerce. The object is to make a start toward achieving a balanced picture of Ndebele economic activities. In conclusion the article speculates on the impact of trade on Ndebele society. Notes. |
