| Abstract: | Historians have proffered different interpretations of the relationship between the British South Africa Company and the British Government and Colonial Office. In the case of the Matabele War 1893 the author argues that there was no difference of opinion between either the High Commissioner and the Company or between the Colonial Office and the Company. The difference of opinion over the War that did exist arose inside the Colonial Office itself, even before the fighting had actually started in Matabeleland. There was one solitary dissentient to government policy on the War and that was Sidney Olivier. The author follows the argument in detail, since it reveals, plainly and unambiguously, the cooperative attitude of the Colonial Office to the Chartered Company. |
