Abstract:This article consists of the central sections of a paper on the origins of Ovambo migrant labour in Namibia, itself a part of a much larger unpublished essay on the Namibian contract labour system. It describes the period 1850-1915, which was a period of structural underdevelopment of the mode of production, which reduced a substantial proportion of family producers to the margin of subsistence. This led to the migration of Ovambo labourers to the south, shortly after 1900. Notes.
