Abstract:Focus is on the question of whether the food crisis in Africa is mainly a result of lagging or insufficient agricultural production or whether it is part of a larger crisis of economic management, reflected in chronic balance of payments deficits, rising foreign indebtedness, inflation, low productivity, corruption, waste, and deteriorating standards of living for all but a privileged few. The paper provides a selective review of the social science literature on various aspects of African agriculture at different levels of social agency, and suggests some ways in which existing insights may be used and further developed in order to place the food crisis in clearer historical and analytical perspective. The paper was commissioned by the Joint Committee on African Studies of the American Council of Learned Societies and the Social Science Research Council for presentation at the twenty-sixth annual meeting of the African Studies Association, December, 1983, Boston. - Notes, ref.
