Abstract:A survey of events in Sudan in March and April 1985, culminating in the overthrow of President Nimeiri and the formation of a new government under General Swareddahab. The coup took place against a background of economic chaos, opposition to the imposition of Sharia law, famine, and growing political instability. The new government is faced with enormous problems: continuing political unrest; Southerner grievances, in which Col. John Garang figures prominently; a deepening food crisis; and an increasing burden of refugees.
