Abstract:Botswana currently depends on imports for 80-90% os its vegetable consumption. The government is, however, trying to encourage local production. Irrigated plots have been established in different climatic areas of the country. These are run as 'commercial' market gardens and data on costs of production, yields and returns recorded. Information on crop growth and profitability in different areas and at different times of year is obtained. Sample data are presented and problems experienced with these units are discussed. Ref.
