Abstract: | This paper describes the situation regarding irrigation and its future development in Mauritius. The objectives and the operational structure of the Irrigation Authority are also described. The paper is mainly concerned with two small-scale irrigation projects. The main conclusions are: 1) small-scale projects are not financially viable; 2) irrigation projects can be operated efficiently by well-established cooperative societies; 3) irrigation facilities should only be provided to full-time planters; 4) the extension service and the Marketing Board must participate effectively in the running of small-scale projects.
