Abstract:Since 1967, sixteen small holder irrigation schemes have been developed in Malawi and more potential exists for irrigation development. The principal crop is rice; the overall production average is 3 t/ha. Due to low dry season flows, research into alternative dry season crops is being conducted. The crops on this programme are what, maize and beans. Self-help irrigation schemes have suffered from inadequate technical knowledge and management problems. There is need to develop a good evaluation and monitoring system that would help to pinpoint problem areas early and avoid any future major rehabilitation programmes. Ref.
