Book title:African regional symposium on small holder irrigation: 5-7 September 1984, University of Zimbabwe, Harare, Zimbabwe
Geographic term:Malawi
Subjects:small farms
Abstract:Self-help irrigation schemes in Malawi occupy a total area of c. 1500 ha. These schemes are often inefficient or do not withstand floods. These physical shortcomings largely originate from a lack of know-how within the farm community and a shortage of financieal means. Recently, surveys have been conducted to assess the self-help potential and to devise appropriate programmes for assistance. It is thought that assistance should focus on the provision of basic physical infrasturcture. This assistance should encompass rehabilitation of existing deficient schemes as well as the development of new ones. Implementation should be accomplished with a maximum participation by farmers.
