Abstract:The narrowness of the field of enquiry of the engineer is not often recognised. There is therefore a clear need to temper the engineers' enthusiasm in advocating novel techniques of water management. An examination of the two longest established schemes in Nigeria, the Bacita Sugar Estates and the South Chad Projects, provides disquieting evidence that Nigerian society has as yet not become attuned to the discipline imposed by an irrigation-assisted system of farming. The types of analysis mostly used appear to be deficient in the aspect of labour input requirements. This has resulted in many unfulfilled objectives. Graph., ref., scheme.
