| Abstract: | Development planners too often see African peasant women as farmers' wives, as houseworkers rather than farmers. Recently, however, African peasant women have gained some visibility within the international development community, due to the international women's movement and the appreciation of the food crisis in Africa. Contents: 1. Getting African women farmers on the development agenda (advocacy of women's interests - African food crisis - the sex division of labor - the impact of policy on the division of labor - implementation strategies). 2. The effects of colonial development policy on women (access to land - agricultural extension and women farmers - disaster relief and women - innovative technology to increase productivity). 3. Selected current projects aiding rural women (Mwea irrigation scheme in Kenya - the Senegalese Groundnut Basin, cereals II project - the Swaziland Project of the UN Voluntary Fund). |
