Abstract:The life history of a single Sotho peasant tenant farmer retold. The story consists of ordinary accounts of events as perceived by Nkgono Mma-Pooe, who was born in 1882, and they have been added to by additional oral evidence available from the immediate family or from people who lived in her home district. She was the direct descendant of the kind of family which formed the communities that were settled in the Orange Free State before and at the turn of the 19th century. Fig., map, notes.
