Abstract: | After a brief look at the historical context of the Islamic schooling tradition in the northern Sudan, the introduction of Western schools, and the present-day postcolonial arrangement of educational institutions, the author examines specific examples of religious and Western schooling in contemporary rural communities of north-central Sudan. He describes and compares an Islamic school and institutions of a Western-model school system as settings or 'packages' for the transmission of religious knowledge by focusing upon curriculum, daily routine, teaching methods, means of social control, and social organisation. His conclusions concern the way in which religious instruction is given in the two kinds of schools, the differences between them, and the effects on the pupils' religiosity and socialisation in general.
