Abstract: | Review of: 'Class Struggles in Tanzania' by Issa G. Shivji (London, 1976); 'The Critical Phase in Tanzania 1945-1968: Nyerere and the Emergence of a Socialist Strategy' by Cranford Pratt (Cambridge, 1976); 'Education and Politics in Africa: the Tanzanian Case' by David R. Morrison (London, 1976); and 'An African Dilemma: University Students, Development and Politics in Ghana, Tanzania and Uganda' by Joel D. Barkan (Nairobi, 1976). The four books reviewed deal with different aspects of Tanzanian policy. They highlight the strains that inevitably exist between the ideal and the actual in the Tanzanian situation, but they do so from different ideological and methodological premises. The books complement each other well. Together they offer a rich and varied picture of the kind of political system that has emerged in Tanzania over the years. Notes. |
