Abstract:Weeds may reduce the yields of irrigated crops in the Sudan by more than 80%. Weed control, which has to take place during a relatively short period of early crop establishment, is very time consuming if it is done by hand weeding or hoeing. The manpower needed is no longer sufficiently available. Mechanical weed control cannot be considered as a general alternative. Therefore herbicides are being rapidly introduced. They have to be imported. Their application requires a high standard of knowledge. For this reason weeds and their control are of increasing importance in research and training programs. Ref., sum.
